3 days in Madeira: a Funchal short-break itinerary

Stay two nights in Funchal, use one full day for Machico or the northwest, and fit city visits around your flights. Includes a no-car version and a three-full-day alternative.

What fits into three days?

For 3 days in Madeira, stay in Funchal and choose one main outing. The plan below counts arrival as day 1 and departure as day 3: two nights, with only day 2 guaranteed to be a full sightseeing day. Use the city time your flights actually leave; do not book three full-day excursions for a two-night break.

Choose Machico if you want a bay, town streets and a less complicated outing. Choose Seixal and Porto Moniz if the north-coast scenery matters more and you are prepared to give the outing the whole day. Neither plan includes a ridge crossing or Porto Santo. If you mean three full days between flights, use the separate sequence below.

Day 1: arrive, then explore central Funchal

Transfer to your Funchal accommodation and leave your luggage. Start with the waterfront and Zona Velha if arrival time allows, keeping dinner in the same area. Mercado dos Lavradores belongs in the daytime portion of the trip, subject to its opening hours; do not make it an arrival-evening promise.

The airport identifies an Aerobus from Arrivals towards Praia Formosa with hotel-area stops, as well as ordinary buses and an Arrivals taxi rank. Match your accommodation to the actual Aerobus stop and departure, or use a taxi/booked transfer. Do not collect a car purely for an evening in the city. Overnight: Funchal.

Madeira Airport: public transport and taxis

Day 2: choose Machico or the northwest

Machico version: travel Funchal → Machico → Funchal. Spend the morning by Machico Bay and in the town, leave time for lunch and use the afternoon for the waterfront rather than another cross-island drive. With a car, Caniçal is an optional second town stop if time permits. Without a car, keep Machico itself as the destination and choose an outbound and return service from SIGA for your date. A bus to Machico is not a transfer to the Ponta de São Lourenço trailhead.

Northwest version: travel Funchal → Seixal → Porto Moniz → Funchal by rental car or a pre-arranged sightseeing service. Give Seixal a coastal stop, then lunch and the longer stop to Porto Moniz. Pool entry depends on operation and sea conditions; the shore visit must still be worthwhile without swimming. Do not add Fanal hiking, Rabaçal or a second coast to this day. Overnight: the same Funchal accommodation.

Visit Madeira: Machico and its bay

Day 3: a local morning, or Monte if the flight leaves room

For an early flight, have breakfast, collect luggage and leave for the airport. With a later flight, choose nearby central streets or the Lido promenade, allowing for travel from your accommodation and back. Do not make a remote excursion the dependency for catching the plane.

Monte Palace is an option only when you have a substantial sightseeing window plus the uphill and return journeys. Give the garden an unhurried morning, then return for luggage and the airport transfer. The garden and museum are visitable; the palace interior is not. The operator warns of steep terrain and reduced-mobility limitations, so this is not a flat substitute for the waterfront. If the timing is tight, leave Monte for a longer stay.

Monte Palace: visit information and accessibility

Without a car: which version is realistic?

The Machico town day is the public-transport version. Use SIGA’s current Funchal–Machico options, save both boarding stops and the usable return, and keep enough time to reach the stop. No specific departure is assumed in this itinerary.

For Seixal and Porto Moniz together, book a sightseeing excursion or a driver with an agreed Funchal pickup, both named stops and a return. Compare the actual time in Porto Moniz and any pool admission, not just a tour labelled “west”. A bus reaching one town does not establish a workable two-town circuit. If no suitable service is available, use Machico or a second Funchal day instead; you do not need to hire a car to rescue the break.

If you have three full sightseeing days

With flights outside the three days, use full day 1 for central Funchal and Monte Palace, full day 2 for Machico, and full day 3 for Seixal and Porto Moniz. This is a different trip length from the two-night plan above.

Walkers can replace the Machico town day with one qualified walking outing, with the exact trail, entry and return transport arranged. Do not add a full walk after the northwest circuit. PR11 at Ribeiro Frio is listed open on the sources checked on 25 October 2026: 1.5 km each way and about 1½ hours for the walk, before transfers. It is a forest/viewpoint alternative, not the same landscape as the exposed eastern peninsula.

Walking bookings and a poor-weather swap

For IFCN-managed classified trails covered by the system, reserve the specific route and entry slot through SIMplifica, including exempt visitors. The 2026 individual visitor fee is €4.50 for an ordinary covered route; full PR1 has a separate tariff and one-way logistics beyond Pedra Rija. This short-break plan does not include that crossing.

If a coastal or mountain outing is unsuitable, replace it with central Funchal and a chosen indoor visit or garden when conditions allow. Swapping a sightseeing day does not make a paid trail ticket freely changeable: IFCN limits rescheduling/refunds to official closure or restriction, rather than a visitor simply changing plans. Recheck status and notices before travel.

What to book and budget for

Book two nights in one Funchal accommodation, both airport journeys and the transport for your single main outing. Add meals and any chosen admission separately. If Monte Palace fits, its visitor page lists adult entry at €18 when checked on 25 October 2026; that is garden admission, not a cable-car or airport-transfer package. Reconfirm the price for your date.

Do not buy a multi-day walking tariff just because the holiday lasts three days. It applies to the routes you reserve, not the calendar length of your stay. Accommodation and transport need date-specific quotes; this is a route plan, not an advertised fixed-price package.
