Start with the exact PR code, not a photograph
Check the official route status, read any section-specific IFCN notice, then book the actual route and entry time. A booking is not a guarantee that weather or access will remain suitable. Check again before departure and obey barriers and instructions on the ground.
Official information checked on 24 October 2026. This guide explains the published rules and dated notices; it is not a live all-clear for any trail. The official status page and SIMplifica remain the places to check your chosen date.
Visit Madeira: current classified-route statusRead restrictions at section level
An announcement that a route has reopened can describe only part of it. IFCN’s notices include a 18 June 2026 reopening of PR1.3 between Pico Ruivo and Boca das Torrinhas, while the onward section from Boca das Torrinhas to Encumeada remains described as closed. Do not plan an exit at Encumeada from that partial reopening.
The same notice page records the reopening of PR9 from Queimadas to Caldeirão Verde on 29 May 2026. That is a dated statement about that section, not permission to continue beyond it or proof that it is open on your visit. Check the route’s current status and any newer restriction before booking transport.
For PR1, the page also retains specific maintenance closures for 14–17 and 21–22 September 2026. Those dates are in the past at this check. Neither treating them as a permanent closure nor treating their expiry as a present-day all-clear is reliable.
IFCN: walking-route noticesConflicting status labels: PR10 and the PR6 direction rule
The IFCN notices page retrieved on 24 October 2026 contains a specific notice that PR10 Levada do Furado is temporarily closed between Ribeiro Frio and Lamaceiros after a landslide and pavement collapse. The same page also retains PR10 in a general passable-route list. Do not use that broad list as an all-clear: treat the specified section as unavailable unless a newer official clarification resolves the conflict.
For PR6 Levada das 25 Fontes, IFCN describes controlled circulation: outward from Rabaçal towards 25 Fontes along the levada, returning by the alternative bypass. Check the current instructions and follow the signed direction rather than assuming an unrestricted out-and-back. These are published notices, not guarantees for your walking date.
IFCN: section-specific notices and restrictionsPR8 has signed diversions, not an unrestricted all-clear
On 24 October 2026, Visit Madeira’s individual PR8 Vereda da Ponta de São Lourenço page marks the route RESTRICTED and describes minor temporary diversions, marked by specific signs and directional arrows. IFCN’s broad notices list calls PR8 passable. Read those together: passable does not mean that the original line is unrestricted. Follow the specific signed diversions and current on-site instructions.
Visit Madeira: PR8 restriction and signed diversionsHow the SIMplifica reservation works
For the IFCN-managed classified trails covered by this system, reservations are made online through SIMplifica. Select the official PR code and route, date, available entry slot and all participants, then complete the applicable payment and retain the confirmation. Do this before travelling to the start; IFCN says bookings and payments are not handled at its premises.
A full slot is unavailable even if the trail itself is open. IFCN also explains that a route may be absent from booking because it is closed, is not classified, or is managed by another entity. Absence from the portal does not establish that it is free or safe to walk. Check the route manager and notices rather than guessing.
SIMplifica: official walking-trail bookingPublished 2026 visitor tariffs
- Individual route, except full PR1
- €4.50 for a visitor without a protocol, subject to applicable exemptions.
- PR1 to Pedra Rija and back
- €4.50; this does not buy access to the full crossing.
- Full PR1
- €10.50; IFCN lists associated exit routes in its ticket conditions. Access restrictions still apply.
- Combined-route rates, excluding PR1
- €9 for one day, €22.50 for three days, €52.50 for seven days. These are tariff calculations, not unlimited-access passes.
A combined rate does not replace route reservations
IFCN says the portal applies the most advantageous individual, daily or multi-day tariff to the routes you select. Each intended route still needs its own reservation and available entry slot. Full PR1 is excluded from the combined-route tariffs. Do not buy a multi-day option expecting to walk into any trail whenever you wish.
Exemptions are not a general exemption from registration: IFCN’s FAQ says registration is mandatory for users who benefit from a fee exemption. Check the correct participant category and proof requirements in the portal. Tour operators with IFCN protocols have different tariffs, so the independent-visitor amounts above are not a tour-price quotation.
IFCN: classified trails and 2026 booking FAQPR1 is not a simple out-and-back crossing
IFCN’s published arrangement keeps Pico do Areeiro to the Pedra Rija viewpoint bidirectional. Beyond Pedra Rija towards Pico Ruivo, the crossing runs one way, Pico do Areeiro → Pico Ruivo. Do not assume you can retrace the full crossing to a parked car.
The FAQ identifies PR1.1 towards Ilha and PR1.2 towards Achada do Teixeira as exits. Confirm your chosen exit is open, reserve as required and arrange collection at that endpoint. IFCN explicitly does not provide your return to Pico do Areeiro. Its older FAQ wording about PR1.3 must be read alongside the more specific partial-reopening notice, not as permission to exit all the way to Encumeada.
IFCN: classified trails and 2026 booking FAQBook both ends of a one-way walking day
Arrange arrival at the permitted start and collection at the chosen open exit. Compare a transfer or guided outing with driving: leaving a car at Areeiro does not bring it to Achada do Teixeira or Ilha.
Arrange separate trailhead arrival and finish pickupBefore leaving your accommodation
Check route status and specific notices again, then check conditions and your transport. Tell someone your route and expected return; carry suitable footwear and clothing, food, water, a charged phone and the saved booking. Plan to finish before dark.
Visit Madeira advises not continuing in heavy rain or strong wind, and turning back by the same route where appropriate. Do not apply that generic advice as permission to reverse a one-way section of PR1: follow the route’s specific controls and on-site instructions. If access or weather does not fit, change the day’s activity rather than improvise around a closure.
Visit Madeira: current classified-route statusChoose a base without assuming trail access
Staying near mountains or Laurissilva does not establish a usable walking connection to a trailhead. Choose where you want to spend evenings, then solve each walk’s start and finish separately.
Compare Madeira basesBuild a week that can change
Keep a city day available rather than tying the whole holiday to one high route. The seven-day plan groups outings by area and includes car and no-car versions; a walking day still needs its own access and booking checks.

Compare Balcões, the Pico Ruivo out-and-back, 25 Fontes, São Lourenço and full PR1 by terrain and transport. A shorter distance does not remove exposure, and the full Areeiro crossing needs a different finish pickup.
Compare Madeira hiking choicesPorto Santo has its own route notices
The IFCN page also retains a temporary closure of Porto Santo PR3 Levada do Pico do Castelo for water-network works. Do not confuse it with PS PR2 Vereda do Pico do Castelo. For a beach visit, choose between a day trip and an overnight stay before adding a separate walk.
Porto Santo day trip or overnightPlan PR1 with its exit rather than a return to Arieiro
The directional route guide separates the full crossing, Pedra Rija out-and-back and PR1.2 summit approach. It also distinguishes expired maintenance dates from current access checks and explains what the full PR1 ticket covers.

PR6 and PR6.1 are separate route choices, even though they share an approach. The Rabaçal guide explains 25 Fontes versus Risco, the outward levada and return bypass, and why two whole-route distances do not make a measured combined circuit.
