Which airport transfer should you choose?
Madeira airport transfers to Funchal work best when you choose by the final address, not just the city name. The Aerobus serves central Funchal and the western hotel area towards Praia Formosa. A taxi or prebooked transfer avoids the walk from a bus stop to a hillside apartment.
For two people staying near Avenida do Mar or the Lido, start by comparing the Aerobus with a whole-vehicle taxi quote. For a family carrying a buggy and several bags, or anyone needing step-free transport, an arranged vehicle may be worth the extra cost. Confirm the vehicle and assistance required before booking; an ordinary taxi or bus listing does not establish wheelchair accessibility.
Route, timetable and displayed fares checked on 24 October 2026. The SIGA page dates its current Aerobus information from 1 April 2026.

For the Aerobus, choose a central stop such as Mercado or Avenida do Mar, or the western hotel corridor towards Lido and Praia Formosa. A taxi or transfer should use your exact address.

Allow for the final walk
The bus ends your ride at a stop, not your hotel door. Check the walk and slope with your bags. For a booked vehicle, agree a reachable drop-off point if the property is on a pedestrian street.

From Arrivals to the right Funchal stop
The airport lists the Aerobus departure at Arrivals. In SIGA’s airport-to-Funchal route, the airport is stop 01. Useful stops include Mercado (04), Avenida do Mar (06), Plaza Madeira (07), Terminal SAM (09), Lido (15), Fórum Madeira (19) and Praia Formosa (26). Stop 05 is marked disabled: do not use it as your meeting point.
Choose Mercado for accommodation near the market and eastern centre, Avenida do Mar for the central waterfront, and Lido or the relevant Estrada Monumental stop for the western hotel district. Match the actual street address to the route map before boarding. A hotel described as being “in Funchal” can be well uphill of this coastal corridor.
The route gives estimated elapsed times from the airport of 22 minutes to Mercado, 24 minutes to Avenida do Mar, 38 minutes to Lido and 50 minutes to Praia Formosa. These are route estimates, not allowances for baggage collection, waiting for the next bus or walking to your room.
SIGA stop map and hotel indexAerobus hours: do not assume a bus for every flight
The published timetable starts airport departures at 08:30 and ends them at 22:00 on weekdays, Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays. The intervals differ by day: for example, the weekday list includes 12:00 and 13:00 departures, while the Sunday and holiday list jumps from 12:00 to 14:00. There is no Aerobus service on 25 December.
A flight landing before 22:00 does not guarantee that you can catch the last bus. Allow for the actual time you leave Arrivals. If you miss it, use the taxi rank or your agreed transfer rather than expecting an unlisted overnight Aerobus.
For the return, the published first departure is 07:00 from Praia Formosa, not from every Funchal stop. Intermediate pickup times depend on where you board. Choose your return service against your airline’s airport arrival requirement, rather than copying an airport departure time into the opposite direction.

SIGA’s displayed fare graphic lists an adult ticket at €6.70 and a child ticket at €3.30. It does not state the child age band or a return-ticket price, so neither is assumed here. The route leaflet says cash payment only; carry euros for boarding rather than relying on a bank card.
Local public buses are another option through SIGA’s timetable search, but they are not interchangeable with the Aerobus. Check the exact airport stop, direction and departure for your date; do not assume that a general island bus fare or pass includes this airport service.
Displayed Aerobus fare graphicTaxi rank, transfer meeting points and prices
The airport places its taxi rank at Arrivals on ground floor 0. Its published tariff describes a €4 starting amount, a 20% increase at night between 21:00 and 06:00 and throughout Saturdays, Sundays and holidays, plus a €1.50 baggage or animal supplement. The €4 figure is not the price of a ride to Funchal. Get the applicable journey estimate and understand the meter and supplements before setting off.
For a prebooked transfer, use the confirmation’s meeting point rather than joining the taxi queue. Supply your flight number, accommodation address, passenger and bag counts, and any child-seat or mobility requirement. The useful quote is the total including those needs, any night charge, waiting time after a delayed flight and the cancellation terms. We have not verified a fixed private-transfer price or a particular operator’s live availability.
Madeira Airport: transport and taxi informationStaying in central Funchal or the Lido?
Central accommodation can shorten the final walk from Mercado or Avenida do Mar. A Lido hotel may be close to the Aerobus corridor but farther from the old town during the rest of your trip. Compare the area before treating an airport stop as the deciding reason to book.

Collecting a car at the airport makes sense when you need it immediately for your accommodation or onward route. For several city days first, compare an airport transfer plus later car collection with paying to rent and park a vehicle you will not use.

The airport ride solves arrival day, not transport to remote viewpoints or a walking route’s finish. Plan those separately around your base and the outings you actually intend to make.
