What is the Levada dos Balcões walk?
Levada dos Balcões is the common search name for PR11 Vereda dos Balcões, a short out-and-back from Ribeiro Frio to a mountain viewpoint. The official route follows Levada da Serra do Faial for 1.5 km each way, making a 3 km return walk. Visit Madeira rates it easy and gives about 1 hour 30 minutes.
Choose it for a short forest walk rather than a summit climb. The individual Visit Madeira page marks PR11 OPEN and IFCN’s notices list it as passable when checked on 24 October 2026. You still need the appropriate entry booking and suitable conditions on the day.
Visit Madeira: PR11 route and accessWhere to start and which path to follow
Start at the signed PR11 entrance beside ER103 in Ribeiro Frio. Follow the Balcões signs alongside the levada to the viewpoint and return by the same path. This is not a through-walk to Santana or a route to Pico Ruivo.
Ribeiro Frio also appears in descriptions of PR10 Levada do Furado. Do not mistake that longer route for an extension included in this short outing. The specific IFCN notice retains a landslide and pavement-collapse closure affecting Ribeiro Frio–Lamaceiros, even though the broad list also calls PR10 passable. This guide does not recommend adding that section.
IFCN: current section-specific trail noticesWhat you can see from Balcões
The viewpoint faces the forested valleys and the central mountain range. Visit Madeira names Pico do Areeiro, Pico das Torres and Pico Ruivo among the peaks visible on clear days, as well as the Fajã da Nogueira hydroelectric plant. Low cloud can hide the mountain view.
The walk itself follows the Laurissilva forest and water channel, so it can still interest visitors who want a short forest outing without a guaranteed panorama. If seeing the peaks is the only reason for the trip, keep the timing flexible rather than treating a ticket as a clear-view reservation.
Visit Madeira: PR11 route and accessHow easy is it, and is it accessible?
PR11 is the shorter, easier choice compared with PR1.2 to Pico Ruivo or the full Arieiro crossing. Visit Madeira’s route panel lists altitudes of 870–880 metres, but a narrow altitude range does not certify a smooth surface, step-free entrance or accessible viewpoint.
The official route material reviewed here does not establish continuous wheelchair access, accessible parking bays or pushchair suitability. Do not rely on the word “easy” for those requirements. If step-free access is essential, obtain route-specific confirmation from IFCN before committing transport; its published contact is +351 291 145 590. For children, judge the ability to manage the complete return walk and supervise them beside the water channel and at the viewpoint.
Visit Madeira: PR11 route and accessBalcões entry fee and booking
The published 2026 independent-visitor price is €4.50 for a visitor over 12. Children aged 12 and under are exempt from the fee but still need registration and a booking. Madeira residents have a fee exemption with the required proof, not a general exemption from booking.
Reserve PR11 through SIMplifica for the date and available entry slot. Same-day bookings are possible only when there is availability. A combined daily or multi-day tariff still requires a separate reservation for each route, and payment does not establish that a trail will remain open.
IFCN: 2026 reservations, fees and exemptionsGetting to Ribeiro Frio by bus
Use SIGA’s Santana route page to identify the Funchal–Santana service: it labels former line 56 as route 801. Select a journey that actually serves Ribeiro Frio, then establish the return before reserving a trail slot. Not every Santana service or routing passes the same places.
SIGA links a current timetable download from that page. An older Santana network PDF also remains online with 2023 revision dates, so this guide does not repeat its departure times as a current schedule. Use the current linked timetable for your weekday, Saturday or Sunday/holiday journey rather than an old screenshot. Leave room for the walk and the transfer between the stop and entrance; the bus booking, if applicable, and trail booking are separate.
Driving, parking and a practical half-day
Navigate to Ribeiro Frio on ER103, not to a generic pin for the Balcões viewpoint. The viewpoint is reached on foot. Arrange parking legally before entering the path and leave the road and entrances clear. Current space availability, a parking price and designated accessible bays were not confirmed by the official route listing; no free-parking or guaranteed-space claim is made here.
As an editorial half-day plan, travel to Ribeiro Frio, complete the out-and-back at your own pace, then allow a break before returning. The route description identifies Ribeiro Frio Forest Park and its trout nursery as a nearby separate visit, but does not establish their current admission or opening programme. Do not fill a fixed onward schedule with an unverified attraction.
Visit Madeira: PR11 route and accessBalcões or Pico Ruivo?
Choose Balcões for a shorter forest walk and a viewpoint when visibility permits. Choose Achada do Teixeira–Pico Ruivo for an uphill summit objective with a separate mountain-road transfer. Ribeiro Frio and Achada do Teixeira are not interchangeable drop-offs.
For a town-and-houses day, Santana is a separate northeast visit rather than a walking continuation from Balcões. Avoid stacking all of these into one bus-dependent day: first establish the actual journeys and leave enough time for the walk you chose.
