Machico, Madeira: beach, things to do and where to stay

Use Machico for a sandy-beach stay and eastern Madeira outings. Compare the bay with Porto da Cruz, choose a practical accommodation location and keep peninsula hiking separate.

Is Machico a good base in Madeira?

Machico is a useful base if you want a town beside a sandy beach and plan to spend time in eastern Madeira. Stay near Machico Bay for a beach-led break; choose Funchal instead if city sightseeing is the main purpose of your trip. Porto da Cruz, although part of Machico municipality, is a different coastal village with a surfing beach and separate swimming pools. A listing that says only “Machico” does not establish which of these places you will sleep in. For a first visit, a half-day town-and-beach stop is a reasonable editorial allowance. Stay longer if beach time is the point, rather than treating Machico as somewhere to fill the gap after a demanding walk. The town beach and the PR8 peninsula trail require separate transport and planning.

Machico Beach: look for Banda d’Além

Banda d’Além is the golden-sand beach in Machico Bay. The sand was imported from Morocco; it is not the natural black sand associated with Seixal or Alagoa. Use the beach’s full name as your map pin when comparing a room’s location with the shore. Visit Madeira lists changing cabins, showers, toilets, parking and access walkways, with facilities for people with reduced mobility. It specifies lifeguard cover during the bathing season, not throughout the year. That distinction matters for an autumn or winter stay: beach facilities do not establish a staffed bathing service on your dates. Follow the flags and any local restrictions rather than assuming the bay is always suitable for swimming.

What to do on a short visit

Start at Machico Bay and spend time along the town waterfront before choosing whether to stay at Banda d’Além. Put lunch in the town between the two, rather than scheduling a beach stop only after a long drive around the island. This suggested sequence leaves you free to shorten the visit when bathing conditions are poor. If you want a second eastern stop, make it a distinct choice: Porto da Cruz for Alagoa and Engenhos do Norte, or a separate outing towards Ponta de São Lourenço for the peninsula landscape. Trying to include the town, a full peninsula walk and a long surf session in one day makes each stop dependent on the last. The peninsula’s location in Machico municipality does not make it a walk from the beach.

Ponta de São Lourenço is a separate walking day

PR8 starts at Baía d’Abra and runs towards Casa do Sardinha, not from Machico Beach. The official route page describes 4 km outward plus 4 km back, moderate difficulty, little tree cover and exposure to northern winds. Arrange transport to the actual trailhead and bring water and protection from sun and wind; a room in Machico is a base, not a trailhead transfer. Checked on 24 October 2026, the individual Visit Madeira page marks PR8 RESTRICTED and describes signed temporary diversions. Do not interpret its general route description as unrestricted access. Follow the marked diversions and current official instructions; this guide does not recommend an unsigned alternative.

Book a classified walk separately from your room

IFCN requires online registration and a reservation through SIMplifica for the classified routes covered by its system, including visitors exempt from paying. Its 2026 FAQ lists €4.50 for an individual route other than PR1; the PR8 destination page also lists €4.50 for visitors over 12. A multi-day tariff does not remove the need to reserve each route and timeslot. A room booking, bus ticket or place on a vehicle does not by itself demonstrate that your trail entry is booked. If a tour includes admission, the operator needs to provide the booking arrangements. Availability in SIMplifica and instructions on the ground still govern the visit.

Getting to Machico without a car

Use SIGA’s official timetable pages rather than searching only an old bus number. Its Machico page pairs former route 23 with 701 and links the downloadable timetable. The site is changing route numbers, so keep the destination and direction alongside the number when planning a journey. Do not assume every service labelled Machico has the same intermediate stops or airport connection. For an arrival with luggage, choose a bus only after matching its actual stop and departure with your flight and accommodation. A pre-booked ride is the simpler alternative when the timetable does not work. Do not plan to walk from the airport on the basis of apparent map proximity. For a day visit from another base, settle the return service before making the beach your final stop.

Where to stay in Machico

For a stay centred on the beach, search around Machico Bay and check the exact accommodation pin against Banda d’Além. For a place farther up the valley or in another parish, decide how you will reach the bay for meals and beach time before booking. “Sea view” and “Machico municipality” are not substitutes for that location check. A beach-led stay can work without hiring a car for every day, provided your arrival and planned outings have workable connections. If you want repeated drives across the island, compare the parking arrangements at the actual property with the cost of transfers. Choose accommodation on location and transport first; this guide does not imply that a particular hotel is available or that current room rates have been checked.
