Is April a good time to visit Madeira?

April is a useful month for a Madeira trip built around Funchal, gardens and walks rather than guaranteed beach weather. Funchal’s average daily maximum is 21.0°C and its average daily minimum is 14.9°C in the IPMA 1991–2020 climate normal. That supports light layers for the coast, not an assumption that the mountains will be warm or dry.

Choose Funchal for a first visit without a car, or when you want worthwhile city days between excursions. Choose a north-coast stay only if that coast is part of the trip itself. If the Flower Festival is the main reason to book, the exact dates matter: the official 2027 festival starts on 29 April, so most April stays miss it.

April weather: use Funchal averages for the coast

The same Funchal normal records a monthly mean temperature of 17.9°C, rainfall of 45.2 mm and an average of 4.7 days with at least 1 mm of rain. These are long-term station averages at 58 metres above sea level, not a forecast or an island-wide temperature. A rainy day can interrupt a walk even in a month with a relatively modest rainfall total.

For a mixed trip, pack a waterproof jacket, a warmer layer for high ground and shoes with grip. Keep ordinary city clothes for Funchal. Use the forecast for the actual area you intend to visit; a mild waterfront afternoon is not evidence of visibility or conditions at Fanal, Ribeiro Frio or Pico Ruivo.

Flower Festival 2027: April only catches the start

Events Madeira lists the Flower Festival from 29 April to 30 May 2027 in Funchal. Its overview names parades on 2 and 16 May. An April-only holiday therefore does not include either of those May parade dates; arrive in late April and extend into May if the first parade is the purpose of the trip.

Use the dated programme for the year you will travel rather than reusing a previous year’s parade weekend. A garden visit and the Flower Festival are different bookings: you can plan Funchal’s gardens outside festival dates without expecting street parades. Select flights and your Funchal nights before choosing accommodation farther from the city.

Where to stay for an April trip

Central Funchal is the practical default for a short stay with city walks, meals and excursion pickups. The Lido area suits a hotel-led stay if you accept a separate journey into the centre. Compare the actual accommodation address and gradients rather than treating every Funchal listing as a walkable old-town base.

Ponta do Sol suits a quieter southwest-coast stay when you have solved excursion transport. Porto Moniz and Seixal make more sense for a north-coast segment than as substitutes for Funchal festival nights. Do not choose a property solely for its pool if swimming every day is essential to the holiday.

Walking in April: reserve the route, keep the day flexible

Choose a walk for its actual distance, exposure and return transport. PR11 Balcões is a short out-and-back from Ribeiro Frio; a Pico Ruivo summit walk or a long levada day is a different commitment. An April date alone does not establish access, and today’s opening status does not promise that a route will be open next spring.

Before booking a transfer, match the exact route and permitted finish to the current IFCN notices and reservation system. The 2026 system requires advance online registration for covered IFCN routes, including exempt users, but that is not a certified April 2027 tariff. Use the rules and prices published for your travel date, and retain a Funchal day that can trade places with the walk.

A useful shape for four April days

As an editorial pacing suggestion, use your first full day for central Funchal and the waterfront. Give Monte and its garden a separate day so that a garden visit is not squeezed between island transfers. Use the best suitable forecast day for a preselected walk, and the other excursion day for one coast rather than a rushed circuit of the entire island.

Keep the walking and coast days interchangeable. If you are arriving for the late-April festival opening, leave time in Funchal itself instead of spending every daylight hour on an excursion. For a longer stay, the seven-day guide adds a fuller island sequence; do not assume each extra day needs a different hotel.
