Funchal cable car: tickets, Monte stops and the return journey

The Funchal–Monte cable car costs €16 one way or €22 return for adults. Choose the return before buying: the Monte toboggan ends in Livramento, not downtown.

Which Funchal cable car do you need?

For the cable car from the Funchal waterfront to Monte, choose Madeira Cable Car, also called Teleférico do Funchal. Its lower station is on Rua Dom Carlos I beside the Old Town; its Monte station is at Largo das Babosas 8. The operator gives an average journey time of 18 minutes over 3.2km. That is time in the cabin, not the queue or the whole Monte visit.

Choose this line for the uphill ride and a Monte outing. If you want to return the same way, the adult return ticket is cheaper than buying two single journeys. If the wicker toboggan is the main attraction, a one-way cable-car ticket can make sense, but you still need a journey from the sledge finish to your actual destination.

Ticket prices and what they cover

Prices displayed by the operator and checked on 25 October 2026 are €16 adult one way and €22 adult return. Children aged 7–14 receive a 50% reduction; ages 0–6 travel free. These are the standard cable-car fares, not a combined garden or toboggan package.

The operator sells tickets through the ticket link on its own website and advertises e-tickets valid for 60 days after purchase. Do not confuse that validity with a reserved boarding time or a guarantee of an empty queue. Garden admissions and the toboggan are separate purchases unless the exact product you choose expressly includes them. Follow the official ticket link rather than assuming a reseller listing is the operator.

Opening hours: use the operator, not an old listing

The operator currently lists 08:45–17:45, every day except Christmas Day. Its conditions say service hours can change because of adverse weather, maintenance, power interruptions or passenger demand; the last boarding time is displayed at the stations. Read that display when arriving, especially if you hold a return ticket.

Do the uphill trip with enough time for your chosen Monte stop and the return. A late cable-car arrival does not leave a dependable window for a garden visit and a toboggan ride. The two operators also have different calendars: the cable car normally runs on Sundays, but the carreiros publish Monday–Saturday operation.

Monte Palace, the church or another cable car?

From the upper station, choose the visit you came for. Monte Palace Tropical Garden is at Caminho das Babosas; the Church of Nossa Senhora do Monte and the sledge departure are separate places in Monte. Treat a garden visit as time spent there, not as a quick stop automatically included in the cable-car fare.

The Botanical Garden Cable Car is a different line, connecting the Botanical Garden area with Monte. It is not the waterfront-to-Monte cable car. Monte Palace Tropical Garden and Madeira Botanical Garden are also different gardens. If an offer includes a garden or a second cable car, read which one it names before paying. Cabo Girão and other island cable cars are not alternative downtown stations for this journey.

Madeira Cable Car: Monte points of interest

Choose the return before buying the outward ticket

For the simplest loop, buy the return cable-car ticket, visit Monte and come back to the same upper station before its last boarding. This suits visitors who want the ride and a garden or church stop without arranging a third transport leg.

For the cable-car-up, toboggan-down combination, use the one-way cable-car fare and go to the carreiros departure below the Monte church staircase. The sledge finishes at Caminho do Monte 82/84 in Livramento. It does not reach the waterfront cable-car station. Arrange a taxi or other onward transport from that finish, or choose a walking route separately rather than assuming the paid ride completes your return.

A cable-car return ticket only provides the return from the upper station. It is not a pickup from Livramento after a sledge ride.

What two adults should budget

For two adults, standard return cable-car tickets total €44. Two adult one-way tickets plus one two-person toboggan ride total €72: €32 for the cable car and €40 for the sledge. The second option still excludes the journey from Livramento, garden admission and any food. These are separate published fares checked on 25 October 2026, not a combined ticket being offered for sale.

Choose the return cable car if the ride and Monte visit are enough. Choose the sledge combination if that short downhill attraction is worth the extra spending and onward-transport arrangements. Do not buy a return cable-car ticket merely because a guide calls the toboggan a return to Funchal.

Wheelchairs and a weather backup

The cable-car operator states that the boarding areas, cabins and adapted toilets are accessible to passengers with reduced mobility. Vehicles slow in the stations and staff can stop the installation when needed. Only one wheelchair is allowed per cabin. These boarding arrangements do not establish that every Monte street, garden or the toboggan is suitable for the same visitor.

For a visitor who needs accessible transport throughout, settle the Monte destination and return arrangement as well as cabin boarding. If service is interrupted or the outing no longer suits the weather, keep the central Funchal day as the alternative. Monte transport is not evidence that any mountain trail is open; a separate hiking day needs its own current access and booking check.
