7-day Madeira itinerary: a week with or without a car
Six nights in Funchal, city time, an eastern outing, Santana and the northwest, with separate self-drive and no-car plans and a flexible day for weather changes.

Use one base and group the days by area
This seven-day Madeira itinerary is for seven calendar days including arrival and departure, with six nights in Funchal. It combines two city-focused days, an eastern outing, a Santana or Ribeiro Frio day and a northwest day. It is not seven full sightseeing days plus flights.
Choose the self-drive version for independent stops, or the no-car version for a town bus outing and selected organised excursions. Both keep the same base. If your flights are late-in and early-out, cut an excursion rather than pretending those travel days are usable full days.

7 days · 6 nights
One Funchal base with independent eastern, northeastern and northwestern outings. Keep city days car-free if that suits your rental arrangements. These are suggested day groupings, not road or trail access guarantees.
- Day 1
Arrive and keep the evening in Funchal
Transfer to your accommodation, settle in and take a short waterfront or nearby city walk if arrival time allows. Do not book a mountain outing on the assumption that the flight and car collection will be on time. Keep the first evening close to your base.
Overnight: Funchal
Airport transport options - Day 2
Central Funchal, then the Lido
Use Mercado dos Lavradores and the surrounding central streets for the morning, with opening arrangements checked for your day. After lunch choose the Lido promenade; make bathing-complex entry an optional extra subject to opening and conditions. Leave Monte for the flexible day rather than adding every city attraction now.
Overnight: Funchal
A practical Funchal day - Day 3
Machico and the east
Drive Funchal → Machico, spend the morning around the bay and town, then choose Caniçal as a second stop if time and road conditions suit. Return to Funchal. If your priority is PR8 at Ponta de São Lourenço, make it the main activity instead of an extra after the town circuit; check its status, reservation and exposed conditions separately.
Overnight: Funchal
Visit Madeira: Machico and the eastern peninsula - Day 4
Ribeiro Frio and Santana
Drive Funchal → Ribeiro Frio → Santana → Funchal. If suitable and reserved, make PR11 Vereda dos Balcões the walk: Visit Madeira gives 3 km return and about 1½ hours, excluding your drive and extra stops. Allow more time for your own pace. Continue to Santana for the triangular thatched houses. If the walk does not fit, keep the day to a road-based visit or use the city swap; do not replace it with a longer unresearched trail.
Overnight: Funchal
PR11: official route description - Day 5
Seixal and Porto Moniz
Use the day for the northwest: Funchal → Seixal → Porto Moniz → Funchal, with lunch and time beside the sea. Choose pool entry only if the complex is operating and conditions allow. Do not add a full levada walk or Fanal hiking circuit to the same day. Coastal stops are the plan even if swimming is unsuitable.
Overnight: Funchal
Visit Madeira: Porto Moniz and Seixal - Day 6
Flexible city or mountain-interest day
Use this day for Monte and one chosen garden, with entry and outward/return transport checked separately, or exchange it with an earlier excursion if conditions and bookings permit. If a mountain viewpoint is your priority, give it this outing rather than promising a sunrise and a full ridge crossing together. Full PR1 needs a separate ability, access, entry-slot and one-way return plan; it is not included in this general week.
Overnight: Funchal
Check trail restrictions and reservations - Day 7
Local morning and departure
Stay near your base until it is time to collect luggage and travel to the airport. Allow for any car return and onward transfer specified in the rental booking. Add a short local outing only if the flight timing genuinely leaves room; do not make a remote north-coast journey the dependency for departure.
How to swap the days when conditions change
Keep days 2 and 6 as your main alternatives to an exposed outing. If conditions rule out the eastern or Ribeiro Frio day, use one of those city days instead, moving the excursion only where reservations and availability allow. A tour booking may have cancellation conditions, so flexibility needs to be checked before purchase rather than assumed.
PR11’s official description is a short return walk, not a substitute for checking current access. Full PR1 is a different commitment, with a one-way section beyond Pedra Rija under the published rules. Do not substitute it casually when another trail is unavailable. IFCN’s PR1.3 notice describes a partial reopening, not an exit all the way to Encumeada.
Current official access and booking checksWhat to budget for, and what is not included
Price six nights of accommodation, meals across seven calendar days, airport journeys and your chosen transport. For self-drive, include the rental period, fuel, parking and any charges in the actual rental terms. For the no-car plan, include bus tickets, both chosen day excursions and any taxis to meeting points. Compare the total rather than a car’s headline daily rate against a single bus ticket.
Garden admission, managed bathing-complex entry and classified-trail charges are separate unless the booking explicitly includes them. IFCN’s published independent-visitor tariff for covered routes other than full PR1 is €4.50, with applicable exemptions and mandatory reservations. A guided excursion or transfer price is not automatically the trail charge. This itinerary does not quote a live package price.
IFCN: published fees and reservationsPrice the actual week before booking
Use the six-night worksheet and worked two-adult admissions baskets, then add the actual room, meals and complete transport quotes. The no-car and car versions need equivalent visits and separate one-way-walk transfers.
Price the seven-day plan including transport and trail feesDo not add Porto Santo as a casual spare afternoon
This week is for Madeira island. A Porto Santo visit adds its own crossing, check-in requirements, local transport and disruption exposure; it needs a separately researched plan. If Porto Santo is a main reason for coming, remove a Madeira excursion and give the island its own time rather than tacking it onto departure day.

Madeira without a car, or a short car rental?Would a shorter or longer trip suit you better?
Keep the detailed week if you want Funchal and separate eastern and northwestern outings from one base. Use the duration guide if flight times leave fewer usable days or if you want extra walking time or a Porto Santo stay.
