Madeira jeep tours: east or west, pickup and what is included

Compare two named True Spirit full-day jeep routes: eastern viewpoints and Santana, or western coast and Fanal. Check walking stops, admissions, pickup limits and itinerary conflicts.

Choose the coast and stops, then the vehicle

Choose an east Madeira jeep tour for Pico do Arieiro, Santana and Porto da Cruz; choose a west tour for Seixal, Porto Moniz and Fanal. Those are distinct sightseeing days, not two ways to complete every island highlight. Off-road sections are part of the product, so a jeep is a poor default if your priority is a smooth ride or minimal climbing in and out of a vehicle.

True Spirit publishes both full-day formats with approximately 7½ hours on the itinerary. The comparison here is between its actual offers, not an island-wide ranking or a claim of personal experience. A sightseeing viewpoint stop does not include a full mountain hike.

Important ambiguityA peninsula or Arieiro stop is not a PR8 or PR1 walk bookingCabo Girão is in the product URL/title but not the current route narrative

East: a Referta walk is not the PR1 ridge crossing

The east product names Pico do Arieiro before Faial’s off-road section, Santana’s houses, a Referta levada walk and Porto da Cruz’s rum distillery, finishing with the eastern peninsula. Choose it when those stops interest you more than swimming time on the northwest coast.

Referta is the walk named in the current itinerary. Do not replace it in your expectations with Balcões, the Pico Ruivo crossing or the full Ponta de São Lourenço trail. The operator’s shared exclusions mention a Balcões fee even though Balcões is not named in this itinerary; that block does not prove a visit, and its displayed fee should not be used as the current official trail tariff.

West: confirm the route before expecting Cabo Girão

The west narrative takes in São Vicente, Seixal, Chão da Ribeira, Porto Moniz, Fanal and Paúl da Serra, then describes an off-road descent to Ponta do Sol. Its title/URL advertises Cabo Girão, but that viewpoint is absent from the current narrative. Obtain the dated itinerary if Cabo Girão is essential; this guide does not promise both it and Ponta do Sol.

Pool entry and swimming depend on more than the tour name. The exclusions list Porto Moniz admission separately, and the page does not establish that the facilities will be operating or the sea suitable on your day. Fanal is a named stop, not a fog forecast or an included long forest hike.

Pickup, food and admissions are separate comparisons

Both products include a guide, safety instructions, first-aid kit, insurance and pickup/drop-off in central Funchal. The advertised pickup window is 08:35–09:00, not a confirmed time at every hotel. Collection elsewhere is on request with an extra fee and is limited to the south of the island. Do not book a north-coast hotel on the assumption of included collection.

Food and drinks are excluded apart from any expressly specified tasting. Attraction entry is not generally included: read the final itemised booking, especially for Porto Moniz and any confirmed Cabo Girão stop. A shared list of excluded attractions cannot establish where the jeep will actually go. Compare the complete price with lunch, admissions and pickup supplements rather than just the headline fare.

Children, mobility and cancellation

The pages allow only children above three and advise walking shoes, a raincoat in the rainy season and a jacket in colder weather. They do not establish wheelchair adaptation, an accessible vehicle transfer or an alternative for someone unable to join the walk. Describe the assistance, seating or restraint you need and obtain the actual arrangements before paying. A guide and insurance are not medical clearance for an off-road ride.

The published cancellation wording gives 48 hours before the tour for a refund, no refund for a no-show, and allows changes or cancellation for weather. It says refunded amounts have the PayPal commission deducted. Do not interpret this as unconditional free cancellation or the same deadline as a canyoning booking.

A tour booking does not override a trail restriction

IFCN requires a prior reservation for each covered classified trail, even when a multi-day rate applies. Full PR1 has separate arrangements and a one-way section beyond Pedra Rija; the continuing PR1.3 closure between Boca das Torrinhas and Encumeada is not removed by a generic passable listing.

Ask what exact walking section and entry arrangements the dated tour includes, but use IFCN’s current notices for permission. Product pages and official rules were checked on 26 October 2026; no departure, swimming condition or trail opening is guaranteed here.
