Santana, Madeira: traditional houses, day trips and a northeast base
See the thatched houses, choose town time or a separate mountain outing, and plan transport without relying on the closed Rocha do Navio cable car.
Is Santana worth a visit or an overnight?
Santana is worth a stop for its triangular thatched houses, but the houses alone do not require a full day. For a first visit, allow about an hour around the Núcleo de Casas Típicas, then choose one larger activity: the Madeira Theme Park or a separately planned mountain walk. That hour is an editorial allowance, not an official visit duration. Stay overnight when the northeast is a substantial part of your trip, rather than because a photo of the houses looks like an accommodation complex. Santana town, the wider municipality, Queimadas and Achada do Teixeira are different places. A room described as “Santana” is not automatically beside a trail entrance.
Visit Madeira: Casas de Santana and the Núcleo de Casas TípicasThe traditional houses: what you are visiting
The Casas de Santana are wooden houses with steep thatched roofs and blue, red and white façades. Visit Madeira describes an attic formerly used for agricultural storage above ground-floor living rooms. The roof used local cereal straw, including wheat and rye. Go to the Núcleo de Casas Típicas de Santana for the town’s house visit. Treat it as a focused architecture and heritage stop, not evidence that all residents live in matching cottages or that you can enter any house you photograph. A walk around town and a meal can fit around it without committing the whole day to another attraction.

| Compare | Best use of the visit | What it does not include |
|---|---|---|
| Town and Núcleo de Casas Típicas | A short heritage stop, followed by town time and lunch. | A mountain walk or a visit to the separate theme park. |
| Madeira Theme Park | A longer culture-focused visit with traditional-house displays, crafts and children’s attractions. | A current guarantee that every listed attraction is operating. |
| Achada do Teixeira / PR1.2 | A separately booked and equipped mountain outing towards Pico Ruivo. | A walk from central Santana or a transport connection back from another trail. |
| Rocha do Navio cable car | Not an activity to rely on while the destination listing marks it CLOSED. | Proof of operation from a second page that still displays generic hours. |
Madeira Theme Park is a separate visit
The Madeira Theme Park in Santana is a cultural and recreational park, not simply the cluster of houses in town. Visit Madeira lists a traditional-house village, craft demonstrations, the Quintinha, gardens and a children’s pavilion among its attractions. It suits a day when you want a longer cultural stop rather than a mountain hike. Allocate a separate block of the day if you choose it; our suggested pacing is houses and town first, then the park, without adding a major trail. The tourism listing establishes the kind of attraction, not a verified current ticket price or operating programme, so this guide does not quote either.

The Visit Madeira destination page for the Rocha do Navio cable car is marked CLOSED when checked on 24 October 2026. Another official transport page still lists generic opening hours. Until there is explicit confirmation of reopening, treat the closed status as the planning constraint and leave the ride out of a committed itinerary. A description of the reserve or a historical five-minute ride is not evidence that the cable car is operating. Do not substitute a descent on the steep cliff path: this guide has not established that path’s current access or suitability. Santana’s houses and town remain an independent visit.

For Pico Ruivo, the relevant approach is PR1.2, Vereda do Pico Ruivo, from Achada do Teixeira. Visit Madeira currently labels it OPEN and gives 2.8 km each way, or 5.6 km out and back, with moderate difficulty. Do not confuse PR1.2 with PR12 Caminho Real da Encumeada, which is a different route with different restrictions. Achada do Teixeira is a separate road transfer from town. Arrange transport to the start and back from the finish; a bus ticket to Santana does not solve that last leg. Keep enough time for your own walking pace, weather and transport rather than treating the tourism board’s duration estimate as a deadline.
Visit Madeira: PR1.2 route, distance and current statusTrail booking and closures are separate from staying in Santana
IFCN requires advance registration through SIMplifica for its covered classified routes, including people exempt from payment. Its 2026 FAQ lists €4.50 for an individual trail other than PR1, with children aged 12 and under exempt from the fee but still requiring registration. Select the exact route and available entry slot; paying a multi-day rate is not an unlimited walk-in pass. Recheck specific IFCN notices before travelling to the trailhead. The notices include a partial PR1.3 reopening only between Pico Ruivo and Boca das Torrinhas; the onward section to Encumeada remains closed in that notice despite the broad route list. This guide does not propose it as an exit. Queimadas is another separate access point, not a promise that a forest route is reachable or open from your hotel.

SIGA’s Santana page identifies former line 56 as route 801, Funchal / Santana, and links its timetable. Use that route page for the current outward and return options. Do not assume a service to town continues to Queimadas or Achada do Teixeira; those trailhead transfers need their own arrangement. For a short houses-only visit from Funchal, compare the entire return journey with a wider northeast day tour. Driving or a prearranged driver is more flexible if your plan includes separate town, coast and trailhead stops. No route number alone guarantees a suitable arrival or return time on your date.
SIGA: Santana route 56 / 801 and official timetableSantana town or somewhere else in the municipality?
The municipality includes Faial, São Jorge, Arco de São Jorge, Ilha and São Roque do Faial as well as Santana. Choose the actual village and property location according to your days. A stay near Santana town is the relevant comparison for repeated visits to town; an outlying address needs a separate plan for meals, transport and luggage. If you want one no-car base for city evenings and several different excursions, compare Funchal before splitting the trip. If the northeast and mountain outings are your priority, an overnight here can reduce repeated returns across the island, but only after you have solved the journeys from the property to the places you intend to visit.
