Madeira in November: weather, where to stay and realistic trip plans

November suits a mild coastal break with flexible excursions. Funchal’s average daily high is 22.8°C, but rain and different mountain conditions make fixed walking and pool-only plans less reliable.

Is November a good time to visit Madeira?

Yes, if you want Funchal, coastal towns and the option of outdoor days rather than guaranteed beach weather or a fixed summit itinerary. Choose a base you would enjoy even if you replace an excursion. Funchal is the most straightforward starting point for a mixed city-and-day-trip stay; Calheta suits a western coastal holiday when you have arranged transport.

November is a different proposition from early autumn. A mild afternoon does not make it summer, and an itinerary dependent on swimming at Porto Moniz every day is a poor fit. Do not book solely on an assumption that November is always cheap or quiet: compare the actual rooms and flights for your dates.

November temperatures and rain: use the Funchal figures correctly

At IPMA’s Funchal station, 58 m above sea level, the 1991–2020 November normal is a 22.8°C average daily high, 17.0°C average daily low and 19.9°C monthly mean temperature. This describes a coastal station, not the summit conditions at Pico do Areeiro.

The same normal records 80.3 mm of November rainfall and an average 7.3 days with at least 1 mm. That threshold is not a count of all days on which you might see drizzle, and the other days are not guaranteed sunny. Use these numbers to allow flexibility, not to predict which dates will be dry.

Build a week around movable day types

Start with a Funchal day: the centre, Old Town and waterfront give you a useful first orientation without committing to a mountain transfer. Keep another day for Câmara de Lobos or Calheta if local weather suits a coastal visit. A north-coast outing to São Vicente, Seixal and Porto Moniz belongs on a day when road and sea conditions fit the plan; make the coast the attraction rather than assuming you will swim.

Use the clearest suitable day for a qualified walking or high-ground excursion, with its actual reservation and return transport arranged. Leave another city or nearby day that can swap places with it. This is a planning pattern, not a promise that every excursion operates throughout November.

Can you hike in November?

Walking can be part of a November trip, but neither the month nor mild weather in Funchal establishes that a route is open. The IFCN list checked on 25 October 2026 permits PR1 only between Pico do Areeiro and Miradouro da Pedra Rija and back. Do not plan a through-walk from Areeiro to Pico Ruivo from that listing.

For the routes under IFCN’s reservation regime, register through SIMplifica before entering, including if you qualify for a fee exemption. Select a route for its difficulty and exposure, then match the entrance slot and return journey to daylight. If rain, wind, visibility or an official restriction makes it unsuitable, replace the walk rather than seeking an unofficial alternative.

Swimming, boat trips and what to pack

Treat swimming as an optional activity, not the foundation of the week. Mild air does not establish a safe sea, and managed pools can restrict access. A hotel pool only solves part of that problem: if it matters to your booking, verify that the particular pool is heated and operating for your stay. Do not infer either from a photograph.

Pack light clothes for mild coastal afternoons, a warmer layer for evenings and a waterproof. Mountain outings need warmer clothing and suitable footwear. For boat trips, leave flexibility for a weather-related change rather than putting the only available sailing on the last day.

November or December? Choose the reason for the trip

Choose November for a mixed coastal and sightseeing trip if Christmas events are not the aim. The official 2026/27 Christmas and New Year season starts on 1 December 2026 and runs to 10 January 2027, so do not book a November-only stay expecting that full programme. December is the more relevant choice for Funchal’s festive evenings, with its own weather and accommodation decisions.
