What to do in Câmara de Lobos
Câmara de Lobos is a south-coast town west of Funchal, with small fishing boats in the bay, restaurants and bars around the centre, and Vigário Beach nearby. It suits a short town visit or a lunch stop better than a day built around paid attractions.
Allow roughly two to three hours for the harbour, a café or meal and a look at the beach. That is our suggested visit allowance, not an official tour duration. If you add Cabo Girão, leave a separate block for the uphill journey, viewpoint entry and your return.
Visit Madeira: Câmara de Lobos BayStart at the bay, then choose lunch or the beach
Begin around the fishing bay, where the traditional boats are called xavelhas. The Nossa Senhora da Conceição chapel is by the bay; nearby streets have places to eat and drink. Poncha is the local alcoholic drink, so leave it for a visit when you will not be driving.
For a beach stop, head towards Vigário Beach south of Largo da República. Visit Madeira lists it as free and describes a roughly 400-metre pebble beach. Choose it for a nearby shore break, not soft sand. Free entry does not establish safe swimming conditions or lifeguard cover on your visit.
Visit Madeira: Vigário BeachGetting here from Funchal without a car
A taxi or booked transfer lets you visit the town without relying on an unverified coastal through-walk. Specify Câmara de Lobos bay or town centre as the destination; the municipality also includes inland places, so the municipality name alone is imprecise.
For a sightseeing-bus option, Visit Madeira lists Yellow Bus routes linking historic Funchal, Câmara de Lobos and Cabo Girão. Select a product whose route actually includes the stops you need. The tourism listing is not a current departure board, and a bus ticket does not by itself prove that skywalk admission is included. Use the operator link on that listing for the current route, departure and final-return details.
Visit Madeira: Yellow Bus routesCabo Girão is a separate stop above the town
Cabo Girão is the glass-platform viewpoint at around 580 metres above sea level. The harbour and skywalk answer different travel interests: choose the town for food and time by the boats, the viewpoint for a high coastal outlook. A town-centre drop-off is not a skywalk drop-off.
For an unhurried half-day, visit the bay and have lunch, then take your arranged transport to the viewpoint before returning to Funchal. This is a suggested order, not a bus itinerary. Agree the skywalk pickup or onward leg before leaving the town. The Madeira government currently lists €5 adult entry and daily 08:00–20:00 opening; children through age 12 are exempt.

Visit Madeira describes a 2.2 km Câmara de Lobos promenade, but its detailed text and short summary name the endpoints differently. That distance is not the full walk from central Funchal. The Lido promenade, Doca do Cavacas tunnel and Praia Formosa–Socorridos section need separate consideration.
Diário de Notícias reported the Praia Formosa–Socorridos walkway reopening on 23 September 2026 after temporary pavement repairs, citing the regional infrastructure secretariat. That dated report is not a daily access guarantee for the tunnel or the whole coast. Use the directed walking guide for the landmarks, limitations and transport fallback; never bypass a barrier on a road or cliff path.
Visit Madeira: Câmara de Lobos PromenadeVisit from Funchal or stay in Câmara de Lobos?
Stay near Câmara de Lobos bay if evening meals in this particular town are the reason for choosing it. Check the exact accommodation entrance: a property described as Câmara de Lobos can be well above the waterfront or elsewhere in the municipality. Do not infer a flat harbour approach from the address.
For a first trip without a car and several different day trips, a Funchal base usually makes the transport plan simpler. Visit Câmara de Lobos as one outing rather than changing accommodation just for the harbour. If you want a beach-led stay, compare the actual beach surfaces and transport needs before booking.
