Levada do Furado: PR10 closure warning, route and return logistics

PR10 normally links Ribeiro Frio with Portela over 11 km. A specific IFCN closure notice conflicts with general open listings; do not plan the through-walk until the authority resolves it.

Can you walk Levada do Furado now?

Do not plan the full Levada do Furado through-walk on the evidence currently available. At our 26 October 2026 check, IFCN’s notices page still says PR10 between Ribeiro Frio and Lamaceiros is temporarily closed after a landslide and pavement collapse. The same authority’s general route table, and Visit Madeira’s PR10 page, label the route open.

That conflict is unresolved. Treat the specifically named section as unavailable unless IFCN provides newer clarification that it has reopened. A general green label, a published route description or a tour listing is not enough to override the closure notice. This guide explains the normal route and planning implications; it is not a recommendation to enter the closed section.

IFCN: specific PR10 Ribeiro Frio–Lamaceiros closure notice

The normal route is Ribeiro Frio to Portela

Visit Madeira describes PR10 as an 11 km, moderate walk taking about five hours, from ER303 at Ribeiro Frio to ER102 at Portela. These are the published route specifications, not confirmation of present access. The route follows Levada do Furado through Laurissilva forest, then descends towards Portela.

In the official description, the later section passes the Lamaceiros forest station and follows Levada da Portela around the left side of Lombo das Faias before meeting ER102. The named closure between Ribeiro Frio and Lamaceiros therefore affects the through-route from its normal starting end. Do not assume starting from Portela grants permission to cross the affected section in reverse.

Furado is not an extension of the Balcões viewpoint stroll

Balcões is PR11, a separate short out-and-back at Ribeiro Frio. PR10 Furado is the longer one-way itinerary ending at Portela. Sharing Ribeiro Frio does not make the two one continuous easy walk, and a PR11 booking does not establish PR10 access.

For a short Ribeiro Frio outing, use the Balcões guide and check its own status and reservation. If you want a longer levada day, compare Alecrim’s return to ER105 or Levada do Rei’s return from Quebradas, rather than improvising past a closure on Furado. Each alternative has its own distance, entry slot and weather limits.

After reopening, solve the Portela return before booking

When access is explicitly confirmed, the normal PR10 itinerary requires transport at different ends: drop-off at Ribeiro Frio and pickup at Portela. A car left at the start does not appear at the finish. A transfer quote should name both trailheads and a pickup arrangement that allows for the full walking day, rather than a generic “Ribeiro Frio excursion”.

This guide does not certify a workable public-bus through-walk or publish departure times: present access is unresolved, and a bus serving one endpoint would not prove a usable return from the other. If you intend to use buses after reopening, match the current operator timetable for both actual stops, direction and day of the week before choosing an entry slot. Until then, do not pay for non-refundable transport on the assumption PR10 is available.

A booking or fee is not permission to bypass a closure

IFCN’s 2026 fee for an ordinary covered trail other than PR1 is €4.50 for independent visitors over 12. Children aged 12 or under are exempt from payment, not generally from registration. Entry reservations are made online through SIMplifica for each route and timeslot.

IFCN says a classified trail under its management is unavailable for booking when closed. If a portal option appears while a specific closure notice remains, resolve the contradiction with IFCN rather than interpreting the option as a reopening announcement. For this PR10 decision, the unanswered question is access to Ribeiro Frio–Lamaceiros, not how to buy a ticket.

What evidence would change this advice?

A newer IFCN notice explicitly reopening Ribeiro Frio–Lamaceiros, or direct official clarification resolving the existing notice, would change the planning answer. We have not established that reopening. The notices page shows an update date of 14 September 2026, but does not give a separate date beside the PR10 landslide paragraph; do not turn that page-wide date into a claimed date of the incident.

Respect barriers and any newer instructions on the ground. If the contradiction persists for your trip, choose an independently qualified alternative or a non-walking day instead of searching for an unofficial bypass.
