Levada do Caldeirão Verde: PR9 distance, tunnels and booking
Plan the Queimadas out-and-back, distinguish Caldeirão Verde from the longer Inferno route, and prepare for tunnels, exposure, trail booking and parking.

Choose the waterfall walk, not the longer route by accident
Levada do Caldeirão Verde is a substantial forest walk from Queimadas, with four rock tunnels before the waterfall and narrow terrain beside steep slopes. Choose it if you are comfortable with those conditions and a long return on foot. It is not the short accessible Queimadas route, and an official moderate rating does not make it suitable for everyone.
The headline PR9 distance of 17.4 km return on Visit Madeira includes Caldeirão do Inferno beyond Caldeirão Verde. If the waterfall is your goal, turn back at the authorised Caldeirão Verde turnaround rather than treating Inferno as an automatic extra. The shorter waterfall outing still deserves the main walking block of your day.

- Official full PR9 listing
- 8.7 km each way; 17.4 km return to Caldeirão do Inferno from Queimadas. Published duration: 6 hours 30 minutes.
- Caldeirão Verde turnaround
- About 6.5 km each way, approximately 13 km return, inferred from the official 8.7 km route minus the 2.2 km continuation beyond Verde. This is a planning approximation, not a measured GPS track.
- Start and return
- Queimadas Forest Park, above Santana. Return transport should collect you at Queimadas, not at the waterfall.
- Route character
- Officially moderate. Four tunnels before Caldeirão Verde; steep surrounding terrain. The full route’s altitude range is 872–1,020 m, not cumulative ascent.
Current access: the reopening names Queimadas to Caldeirão Verde
Checked on 26 October 2026, the individual tourism page and IFCN classified-route table mark PR9 open. IFCN’s specific notice records the reopening of Queimadas–Caldeirão Verde on 29 May 2026; the notices page carries an update date of 14 September 2026. That is the section this guide uses for its main outing.
The general table also names Caldeirão do Inferno, and the tourism description invites a continuation. The specific reopening notice is narrower. This guide does not treat that combination as a current section-specific confirmation for the extension. Before choosing Inferno, establish explicit access for that section and allow for the full 17.4 km return. An open trail listing is never permission to pass a local barrier, enter a prohibited area beside the waterfall or ignore a later warning.
IFCN: section-specific PR9 reopening noticeFour tunnels change what you need to carry
Take a working headtorch for each walker, with enough power for the return, so your hands remain free in the tunnels. A phone is useful for communication but is a poor sole lighting plan for a long tunnel walk. Wear footwear with grip, carry a waterproof layer, food and spare drinking water, and keep equipment protected from damp conditions.
Expect to slow down where the path narrows or other walkers need to pass. If darkness, low headroom or exposure would make you uncomfortable, choose a different route rather than relying on the word levada to mean easy. Do not plan swimming or a scramble closer to the waterfall as part of the marked walk. Stay within the authorised path and turnaround.
Visit Madeira: four rock tunnels and waterfall geographyGetting to Queimadas and paying for parking
Use Queimadas Forest Park as the road destination, not central Santana or Achada do Teixeira. With a car, the out-and-back lets you return to the same vehicle. Visit Madeira currently publishes Queimadas parking at €2 per hour; budget parking separately from the trail entry fee. That published rate does not establish available spaces or an all-day maximum.
Without a car, compare a prearranged return transfer with a guided walk that explicitly starts at Queimadas and turns at Caldeirão Verde. Agree the collection point and enough walking time before departure. A service to Santana town does not by itself deliver you to the forest park, and a pickup advertised for the longer Inferno programme may not fit your intended walk. No public-bus departure or taxi fare is assumed here.
Visit Madeira: Queimadas start and published parking ratePR9 booking and the 2026 entry fee
For an independent visitor, the published 2026 fee for this individual IFCN trail is €4.50 if you are over 12; visitors aged 12 and under are exempt from payment. Registration is still required for exempt walkers. Reserve the named trail, date and available entry slot online through SIMplifica before travelling. IFCN does not take bookings or trail-fee payments at its physical offices.
A combined daily or multi-day tariff does not let you walk into any route without its own reservation. A transfer or guided-walk price does not automatically prove the route booking is included: establish whether you or the provider is making it. These are the published 2026 terms, not a confirmed 2027 tariff.
IFCN: reservation system and 2026 feesWhen to choose a shorter walk instead
IFCN advises against walking during strong rain, wind, hail or snow, and asks walkers to check fire risk and finish before dark. Do not treat forest cover as protection from a weather warning. Start with enough daylight for your own pace and return transport; the official full-route time is not a deadline to meet.
For a short outing at Queimadas, compare the separate PR9.1 route towards Pico das Pedras, described in our easy-levada guide. It does not reach the waterfall. If you want another substantial northeast forest route with a shorter published return than full PR9, compare Levada do Rei rather than substituting the name in a Caldeirão Verde transfer booking.
