Achada do Teixeira to Pico Ruivo hike: PR1.2 route and bookings

Walk PR1.2 to Madeira’s highest summit and return to the same trailhead: 5.6 km, moderate difficulty, 2026 entry fees and transport choices.

Is this the right Pico Ruivo hike?

The Achada do Teixeira to Pico Ruivo hike follows PR1.2 for 2.8 km to the summit, then returns the same way: 5.6 km in total. Choose it if you want to reach Madeira’s highest point without the longer Pico do Arieiro crossing or a pickup at a different finish. It is officially moderate, not an easy viewpoint stroll.

Visit Madeira lists PR1.2 OPEN when checked on 24 October 2026. That is a route-status check, not a forecast or confirmation that an entry slot is available. Book the exact PR1.2 route and reassess conditions before leaving for the mountains.

Start at Achada do Teixeira, not Pico do Arieiro

The start and return point for this out-and-back is Achada do Teixeira, reached separately from Santana. Follow the marked Vereda do Pico Ruivo towards Casa de Abrigo do Pico Ruivo and continue on the signed summit approach. Return along PR1.2 to Achada do Teixeira.

Casa de Abrigo is a route landmark, not a promise of an open café or supplies. Carry your own water and food. At the junctions, stay with your planned PR1.2 return instead of choosing another trail because its sign names somewhere familiar. PR1.2 and PR12 Caminho Real da Encumeada are different routes.

Distance, walking time and difficulty

Visit Madeira gives 5.6 km return and an estimated 1 hour 30 minutes. Treat that duration as the official estimate, not a deadline for reaching a driver. Allow extra time for your pace, rests, the summit and any congestion; do not book onward travel with no margin.

Pico Ruivo is 1,862 metres above sea level. Reaching it still involves uphill mountain walking even though this approach is shorter than PR1. The tourism page’s printed maximum/minimum altitude figures do not provide a reliable cumulative-ascent figure, so they are not used here as an elevation-gain calculation. Wear walking shoes with grip and bring a windproof layer. Sudden changes in weather are part of the official route warning.

PR1.2 tickets and 2026 entry fees

For an independent visitor over 12 without an operator protocol, the published 2026 individual-route fee is €4.50. Children aged 12 and under are exempt from payment but still need registration and booking. Madeira residents also have an exemption subject to the stated proof requirements.

Book through SIMplifica for the route, date and available entry slot. IFCN does not sell these bookings at its offices. Daily or multi-day tariffs do not grant unlimited walk-in access: each intended trail still needs a reservation. A full PR1 ticket includes PR1.2 without an additional route fee; that is relevant when exiting a booked PR1 crossing, not a reason to buy the full-crossing ticket for this standalone outing.

Getting there and returning without a car

For a hire-car outing, set the destination to Achada do Teixeira rather than Pico do Arieiro or central Santana. The advantage is returning to the same place after the walk. This guide has not verified current parking capacity, a parking tariff or reserved bays; do not interpret an entry ticket as a reserved parking space.

Without a car, book a driver or walking transfer that explicitly serves Achada do Teixeira in both directions. A public bus to Santana is not a confirmed onward connection to this trailhead. Agree the collection point, waiting allowance and what happens if you turn back early. A transfer and a guided walk are different services; choose a guide if you need route support rather than only transport.

Do not turn the return into an unplanned traverse

Do not descend PR1 towards Pico do Arieiro from Pico Ruivo: the section beyond Pedra Rija operates one way in the opposite direction. Nor should you assume that PR1.3 provides a through-route to Encumeada. IFCN’s specific notice opens only Pico Ruivo–Boca das Torrinhas; Boca das Torrinhas–Encumeada remains closed.

The simple transport advantage of this hike disappears if you change the finish. Keep the return at Achada do Teixeira unless you have separately qualified the route, booking and collection for another exit.

When to choose a different day

Do not commit to the summit merely because the trail is listed open. If wind, visibility or your footing makes continuing uncomfortable, turn back rather than following another party. The official description specifically warns of sudden mountain weather changes; a clear morning in Funchal does not establish conditions at the summit.

For a much shorter forest outing, compare Balcões at Ribeiro Frio once its own status and booking are confirmed. If official restrictions or weather make walking unsuitable, use a Funchal day instead of improvising around barriers.
