Caniço, Madeira: town, Caniço de Baixo and where to stay
Choose Caniço de Baixo for a coastal hotel or diving stay, Reis Magos for a beach-focused visit, and central Caniço for the town rather than the seafront. These are different locations: check the exact hotel address before booking.

Where is Caniço, and which part should you choose?
Caniço is east of Funchal, in the municipality of Santa Cruz. An accommodation address saying Caniço does not by itself mean you can step out onto a beach. The town is uphill from Caniço de Baixo, the coastal visitor area. Reis Magos is a named beach area; Garajau is another distinct coastal choice farther west.
For a stay built around hotel facilities, sea access and diving, start with Caniço de Baixo and the Ponta da Oliveira area. For a short beach visit, look at Reis Magos. Choose central Caniço if you want the town itself, accepting a separate journey to the coast. Funchal remains the stronger default if city evenings and frequent changes of transport matter more than a coastal hotel.

| Your decision | Choose it for | Main compromise |
|---|---|---|
| Central Caniço | Town services and a stay away from the immediate waterfront | The beach and coastal diving centres are separate destinations; allow for the hill. |
| Caniço de Baixo / Ponta da Oliveira | Coastal hotels, bathing complexes and a diving-focused stay | Cliffside sea access is not a broad sandy beach; inspect hotel access and outside-guest rules. |
| Reis Magos | A pebble beach with a concrete sunbathing area and promenade access | Choose a nearby address rather than assuming all Caniço accommodation is on this frontage. |
| Garajau | The marine-reserve beach and the Cristo Rei area | Beach access and the restricted monument are separate checks; do not rely on a continuous coastal walk. |
Reis Magos beach: facilities and entry
Reis Magos is a pebble-and-rock beach, with a naturalised bathing pool, rather than a sand beach. Santa Cruz municipality lists free access, showers, toilets including adapted facilities, a first-aid post, restaurant and bar. Its named road approaches are Caminho Velho dos Reis Magos and Rua da Praia dos Reis Magos; pedestrian access is via the public seafront pavement and promenade.
Visit Madeira also describes a concrete sunbathing area and pier. This makes Reis Magos a more useful choice for a simple beach-and-lunch visit than a hotel bathing platform whose admission conditions you have not established. Listed facilities do not establish that a lifeguard is on duty year-round or that swimming is safe on a rough day. Follow the flags and barriers at the water.

Lido Galomar is a bathing complex built among volcanic rocks, with a diving centre identified by Visit Madeira as Manta Diving. Manta’s own website offers house-reef diving directly in front of the centre as well as boat dives. A dive based here therefore need not start with a boat departure from Funchal.
If diving is the purpose of the stay, choose the centre and meeting point before the hotel. A house-reef session, a boat dive and a beginner course are different bookings; being near the reserve does not qualify you for every site. This guide does not promise a particular depth, wildlife encounter, medical clearance or place on a departure. Hotel or lido access is not evidence that diving instruction or equipment is included.

Garajau Beach is within the Garajau Partial Natural Reserve. Visit Madeira describes cable-car access and support facilities at the beach. Treat the cable car as a separate operating service: the tourism description does not establish today’s hours, fare or availability.
The same tourism board’s monument page labels the Statue of Christ the King of Garajau RESTRICTED, although its separate viewpoint description still promotes the location. Checked on 25 October 2026, the restriction label does not explain exactly which paths or areas are affected. Do not build a visit around guaranteed access to the statue, the staircase or a through-walk to the beach. Keep Reis Magos as an independent alternative and obey the barriers at Garajau.

SIGA’s current route index maps former route 155 to 555 Ponta da Oliveira, and former 157 to 556 Reis Magos. Use those destination names as well as the new and old numbers when looking up a journey. A stop serving Ponta da Oliveira is not automatically the right stop for Reis Magos or an uphill town address.
The linked timetable material still uses older numbering, so this guide does not quote a frequency or last bus. Match the exact stop, direction and weekday before choosing a room on the assumption that every evening journey to Funchal is convenient. For a late airport arrival, a prearranged transfer to the actual property avoids relying on an unverified connection.
A Caniço coastal base suits travellers spending real time at the coast or dive centre. For repeated car-free mountain outings, compare it with Funchal first: neither a coastal bus nor proximity on the map proves a trailhead connection. Classified walks have their own route-status and reservation rules, separate from an ordinary promenade visit.
