Things to do in Madeira: walks, gardens, pools and boat trips

Choose activities by the day they need: Funchal on foot, a Monte garden, a northwest coastal outing, a reserved walk or a wildlife boat trip. Compare independent visits with guided formats.

Start with the activities you want time for

For a first Madeira visit, give Funchal a city day, choose a garden or coastal afternoon, and set aside separate days for the northwest and any substantial walk. Add a whale-watching trip if time on a boat appeals; it is an optional sea outing, not a guaranteed wildlife encounter. You do not need a guided tour for every attraction. Central Funchal and a garden visit can be arranged independently. A wider sightseeing excursion is useful when you do not want to drive; a guided walk serves a different job, with route suitability, entry and return logistics to resolve.

Fit the activities into your trip length

Explore central Funchal, then choose the Lido or Monte

Use Mercado dos Lavradores and the nearby central streets as the morning anchor, with time for lunch and the waterfront. The market visit is about produce, flowers, fish-selling areas and the building’s tile panels; check the day’s opening arrangements and ask the price before buying. For the afternoon, choose the Lido promenade if you want to remain beside the sea, or make a deliberate uphill trip to Monte. These are different outings. The Monte sledges finish in Livramento rather than at the waterfront, so that ride does not complete your journey back downtown.

Visit Monte Palace for gardens, tiles and a museum

Monte Palace Madeira is in Monte above Funchal, with ornamental gardens, ponds, tile panels and a museum. The palace itself is not open to visitors. The operator suggests allowing 1½–2½ hours inside, before transport and a meal. The published adult admission is €18; children up to 14 enter free when accompanied by an adult. Ordinary garden visits do not require an advance reservation. From October to March the listed garden hours are 09:00–18:00, with last entry at 17:00; it closes on 25 December. The garden slopes, and the operator warns that it can be challenging for people with mobility difficulties. Garden admission and getting to Monte are separate costs. Prices and hours were checked on 24 October 2026.

Choose a pool afternoon or a northwest coastal day

The Lido Bathing Complex is the city option, next to Funchal’s seafront promenade, with two saltwater pools including one for children. Visiting the promenade does not include admission to the complex. For a wider coastal outing, choose Seixal and Porto Moniz. Seixal has a black-sand beach; Porto Moniz is known for pools formed in volcanic rock. Make these the focus of a northwest day rather than an extra stop after a full levada walk. Pool operation and sea conditions determine whether swimming belongs in the plan; a sightseeing visit is still possible without entering the water.

Choose a walk for fitness and exposure, not just the photograph

PR11 Vereda dos Balcões, the exposed eastern PR8 peninsula and the high PR1 ridge are different commitments. Use our hiking guide to compare the route types before reserving transport. A short route description does not establish step-free access, suitability for your group or current opening. Covered IFCN routes require online entry reservations, including for visitors exempt from payment. The published independent-visitor rate for an individual covered route other than PR1 is €4.50; PR1 has separate segment and full-route tariffs. Multi-day pricing is not unlimited access. A guide or transfer booking does not automatically include the trail reservation or fee.

Treat restrictions as part of the activity choice

IFCN’s published PR1 rules make the section from Pedra Rija to Pico Ruivo one-way, requiring a suitable exit and separate transport back. PR1.3 remains closed between Boca das Torrinhas and Encumeada under its specific notice. The PR6 25 Fontes route uses controlled circulation, with the outward levada and return bypass. The notices page still contains a specific PR10 landslide closure alongside a broader list calling the route passable. Do not treat that inconsistent list as permission to walk the affected section. Read the detailed access guide and official notices before fixing a walking day.

Take a whale-watching boat trip if you want time at sea

Visit Madeira lists whale-watching departure areas including Funchal, Calheta and Machico. Choose a departure near the base you are actually using rather than adding a long transfer for a nominally similar activity. Compare the boat type, boarding arrangements, trip length, minimum age or other participation limits, and the stated cancellation and no-sighting terms of the exact departure. A tourism-board listing establishes an activity category, not a particular sailing, accessible boarding or guaranteed sighting. This guide does not recommend an unreviewed operator or promise a swimming stop.

CompareIndependent optionWhen organised transport helps
Funchal and MonteWalk the central city; arrange a bus, taxi or operating cable-car service for Monte and pay attraction entry separately. When your group needs a defined collection point or assistance; check the actual mobility arrangements.
Seixal and Porto MonizA self-drive coastal day, leaving time at both stops. When you do not want to drive; choose a route explicitly naming the stops and time there.
Classified walkYour own reservation, suitable equipment and confirmed start/finish transport.A guide can support route decisions and logistics, but does not override closures or make every walk suitable.
Wildlife at seaReach the departure harbour independently; the boat outing itself is an organised service.Compare the exact vessel, conditions and boarding point rather than a generic island-wide label.

Porto Santo is a separate travel decision

Choose Porto Santo for a different island stay or a deliberately planned ferry day trip, not as another attraction within Funchal. The crossing, check-in and journey from the port all reduce beach time. Work backwards from the return sailing, and do not attach the trip to the day of an onward flight.

Plan Porto Santo separately

Plan the journeys between activities

If you are not hiring a car, central Funchal is a useful base for city time and selected excursions. Use date-specific public-transport information for town outings; do not assume the same bus reaches a remote trailhead or waits for your walk. Our transport guide separates buses, sightseeing tours and hiking transfers.

Compare transport without a car

Choose your Porto Moniz pool stop

Porto Moniz has a serviced, paid natural-pool complex and separate free-access Cachalote pools with fewer facilities. Choose the actual bathing area and leave time to change; a tour stop does not automatically include admission or enough time for a swim.

A shorter southwest-coast stop in Ponta do Sol

Ponta do Sol works as a village-and-pebble-beach visit without adding a mountain hike. Combine the bay and lunch, or plan a longer stay around the southwest coast with transport arranged for your days out.
